Savor Willamette Valley: Dundee Hills

Volcanic roots | distinctive wines

From the heart of the Willamette Valley, the Dundee Hills rise in gentle folds of red earth, quiet vineyards, and morning fog. This is where Oregon Pinot Noir was born. In 1966, David Lett planted the region’s first Pinot Noir vines into these iron-rich volcanic slopes, guided by little more than intuition and a belief that a cool climate and long northern light could produce wines of rare elegance. He was right, and in time the world agreed.

Today, the Dundee Hills are considered a central part of Oregon winemaking, their iconic red soils counted among the most distinctive terroirs anywhere in the world.

What sets these hills apart lies beneath the vines. The Jory soil here, weathered from ancient basalt over millions of years, runs deep and red, drawing roots downward and giving the wines their signature purity, structure, and grace.

Time in the Dundee Hills extends far beyond the traditional tasting room, with each experience available only to Savor & Cellar guests. A more personal connection to this remarkable region is found through the private vineyard visits, thoughtfully prepared meals, and meaningful time with the winemakers and families behind the wines. From the family legacy of Lange Estate to the Burgundian heritage of Domaine Drouhin and the soil-driven artistry of Alexana, discover how community, craftsmanship, and a deep reverence for the land find their way into these bottles.

“What a delightful experience we had touring the Dundee Hills with Savor Willamette Valley! The wine tastings, restaurants, and accommodations were simply outstanding and top-notch. The presentations offered us the opportunity to explore the local Oregon wines, at times with the owner or the winemaker. No doubt we will be going back to relive this experience with Savor & Cellar in the near future.”
